The BioAPI Consortium General Meeting

Tuesday 20 September, 2005
5:30 PM - 7:30 PM
Hyatt Regency Crystal City — Regency B
Arlington, Virginia USA

This is an informational meeting with the goal of updating the membership and other interested parties on the BioAPI Consortium activities in the last two years, the current status and plans. The meeting is open to the BioAPI Consortium members and the general public

Background

The BioAPI Consortium was formed to develop a widely available and widely accepted Application Programming Interface (API) to serve various biometric technologies. The intent is to:

  • Work with industry biometric solution developers, software developers, and system integrators to leverage existing standards to facilitate easy adoption and implementation.
  • Develop an OS independent standard.
  • Make the API biometric independent.
  • Support a broad range of applications.

The BioAPI Consortium completed development of the BioAPI Specification Version 1.1 in March of 2001. Since that time, it has been approved as an American National Standard (INCITS 358-2002) and Version 2.0 is progressing in the last stages of development within ISO/IEC Joint Technical Committee 1 Subcommittee 37 – Biometrics. The international version is expected to become an ISO standard at the end of this year.

INCITS 358-2002 can be obtained at http://www.techstreet.com/incitsgate.tmpl or at http://webstore.ansi.org/ansidocstore (search for BioAPI)

Second Meeting of the InterNational Committee for Information Technology Standards (INCITS) Technical Committee M1 - Biometrics INCITS M1.4 Ad Hoc Group on Biometrics and E-Authentication (AHGBEA)

Wednesday 21 September, 2005
1:00 PM - 6:00 PM
Hyatt Regency Crystal City – Regency B
Arlington, Virginia USA

Participation in any M1 meeting is open to any directly or materially affected party. Participation by those with expertise in the areas of authentication, information security, cybersecurity, and the application of security mechanisms, particularly cryptographic mechanisms, is solicited.

Background

As a result of the Workshop on Biometrics and E-Authentication Over Open Networks held at the National Institute of Standards and Technology on March 30-31, 2005 regarding the use of Biometrics for Remote e-Authentication Over Open Networks, Task Group M1.4 (Biometric Profiles) of INCITS M1 has formed an Ad Hoc Group to address follow up work on this subject. One of the Ad-Hoc Group’s responsibilities is to develop a technical report describing suitability of biometric architectures, security requirements and recommendations for the use of biometrics at each of the four authentication levels defined in Office of Management and Budget’s Memorandum OMB M-04-04, E-Authentication Guidance for Federal Agencies (assuming biometrics would be allowed for each of these authentication levels).

The Terms of Reference of the Ad Hoc Group can be found here.

The first Ad-Hoc Group meeting was held in June this year in conjunction with INCITS M1 meetings in Cherry Hill, NJ. A meeting announcement for the 21 September 2005 meeting can be found here.

INCITS M1 Technical Committee Document Register includes documents related to this work (search for AHGBEA) at this URL http://www.incits.org/tc_home/m1htm/docs/m1docreg.htm

Call for contributions

An issues list to be addressed at the September meeting can be found here (Document M1/05-0408)

There is a call for contributions also posted in the INCITS M1 Document Register as document M1/05-0411. Contributions to the 21 September meeting are due 6 September, 2005.

A meeting agenda will be posted here.
